This is one of Tibet's most classic and popular trekking routes, highly regarded in international hiking guides. The trail leads you from Ganden Monastery, the 'ancestral seat' of the Gelug school, to Samye Monastery, the 'source' of Tibetan Buddhism.
Along the way, you'll traverse the Shukala Pass at over 5,000 metres above sea level, crossing remote high plateaus while taking in the magnificent scenery from the Lhasa River valley to the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley. This journey offers a profound dual crossing—both geographical and spiritual.
The itinerary combines magnificent monasteries (at both start and end points), high mountain passes, grassland valleys, and Tibetan villages, offering an exceptionally rich experience.
Difficulty levels range from beginner to intermediate, though the high altitudes make this suitable for travellers with some trekking experience.

Hiking: Depart from Ganden Monastery (altitude approx. 3,800 metres) and traverse the mountain ridge for 4-6 hours to reach the Gawa Valley campsite (altitude approx. 4,400 metres) for overnight camping.
Scenery: Along the route, enjoy sweeping views over the Lhasa River valley and distant vistas of the Potala Palace.

Hike: Full-day ascent, crossing the Shukala Pass at 5,284 metres above sea level, then descending to Garpo Ri Camp (approx. 5,100 metres) for overnight stay. Total hiking time approximately 7-8 hours.
Scenery: This is the most physically demanding day, yet the pass offers truly breathtaking views. On clear days, the panorama of snow-capped mountains stretching endlessly into the distance is unparalleled.
